Politically speaking, what is an Independent?

Well I guess I am a left leaning independent. I voted for 2 Republicans, 1 Independent, and the rest were Democrats in the last election. Sometimes it depends on the job people have done. Sometimes it depends on how poorly Democrats have done when they were in office. If there are no inbents you have to go by what people say vs what they do.
