British Monarchy/American Revolution Question?

I am a little confused as to how the British government works (worked during ther American Revolution.) What is/was the role of the king and Parliament. Who actually had more control over the colonies? Did the king have more power than Parliament or vice versa? Why were colonists so upset with the king if Parliament ped certain measures and not him? Info would be greatly appreciated!
