Characters destroying Actors? What happens when the character you play is more popular then you are?

I just noticed Remember Me starring Robert Pattinson bombed, bombed Hard. Does this prove characters are more liked then the actors that play them? I'm wondering the same thing about Hugh Laurie (Doctor House) when House is over, will he be over? What happens when the character you play is more popular then you are?
